If not, let me get you up to speed… The teen was reportedly working a customer’s table, being polite and all, back in September and was shocked when she received a receipt with no tip and a racial slur (n***a) written in as the total.
Toni was later suspended with pay due to the company receiving negative feedback after she posted the receipt on Facebook to create awareness that racism still exits. “This is what I got as a tip last night…. so happy to live in the proud southern states. God Bless America, land of the free and home of the low class racists of Tennesse,” she wrote.
Toni’s story quickly went viral, inspiring people around the world wanting to help fight against racism, with one person, Mathew Hanson, starting a fundraiser called, “Tip For Toni.”
Though the fundraiser was initially planned to last 30 days, the campaign reached it’s $10,000 goal in just 72 hours. The grand total $10,759 was later given to Toni… a tip she’ll never forget!
During a Q&A with Addictinginfo, Jenkins, who is back at work, said she plans to spend the bulk of money on a car to get to work and her community service commitments.
“Before I assumed most people wouldn’t care or think this was a big deal because it happens everyday all over the world,” she said. “I just figured this would be another instance of racism and nothing would come of it, however the love and support I have received from strangers has shown me that most people do truly care about others.”
She calls the overall experience a positive one, despite many people calling the receipt a hoax– which she also denied.
