SAD NEWS: Avonte Oquendo’s Remains Found In Queens Harbor; Family Left Heartbroken Following DNA Test Results

Following an intense state wide search for 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo, an autistic teen — last seen running from the Riverview school in Long Island City on October 4th, is reportedly dead.

This morning, a medical examiner’s office said in a press conference that the human remains found ashore a rocky Queens shoreline in College Point last Thursday have been confirmed as Avonte Oquendo’s.

The NYDailynews reports:

“Searchers began finding body parts, including arms, legs and a lower torso, on the beach by College Point on Thursday. They found a skull on Monday, the family’s lawyer said.

A New York Police Department dive unit searched Friday along a rocky shoreline after an arm and leg were found Thursday.

The cause and manner of death are pending further study, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The medical examiner removed apparent remains from College Point cove where the remains of Avonte Oquendo were found.

The family has been hoping that the remains were not Avonte. They have notified the city that they intend to file suit because he was not prevented from leaving the school.
